Silica Dust Advanced: Rail (MENA)

Tier 2

Operational Overview

You have already completed the generic foundation covering how respirable crystalline silica causes harm and the practical exposure benchmark used across the MENA region. This course applies that foundation directly to rail maintenance and infrastructure work.

Rail projects across the region, from urban metro networks to national and cross-border rail lines, involve genuine silica exposure risks through ballast, concrete sleeper cutting and, on many projects, tunnelling work. This course also flags an important distinction: rail safety regulation itself is set nationally, not region-wide, so the specific rules that apply depend on exactly where you are working.

Instructional Objectives

  • Identify rail maintenance and infrastructure tasks and materials that generate respirable crystalline silica.
  • Apply the general MENA duty-of-care framework and practical exposure benchmarks.
  • Recognise that rail safety regulation is jurisdiction-specific, not a single regional law.
  • Select engineering controls and RPE suited to ballast, sleeper and tunnelling work.
  • Recognise when monitoring and control assurances are not genuinely being met.
