Silica Dust Advanced: Rail (Canada)

Tier 2

Operational Overview

You have completed the national Silica Dust foundation. This course applies that knowledge to rail infrastructure work specifically, and it starts with an honest scope. Not every rail task generates meaningful respirable silica exposure, and treating every job as if it does dilutes attention from the tasks that genuinely matter.

The real exposure sources in rail work are ballast handling and crushing, cutting or drilling concrete sleepers, tunnel and cutting excavation, and platform or structure concrete work. If your role sits mainly in track fastening, signalling or general maintenance without these activities, this course still matters, because rail crews often move between roles, but the controls covered here are aimed squarely at the tasks that actually create the hazard.

You will also work through Canada's provincial patchwork of exposure limits, since no single national number applies, and the practical controls that keep silica exposure down on a rail worksite.

Instructional Objectives

  • Identify which rail infrastructure tasks genuinely generate respirable crystalline silica
  • Explain the ACGIH TLV's role as Canada's common reference point in the absence of a national limit
  • Apply the correct provincial exposure limit for your own jurisdiction
  • Select effective controls for ballast, concrete sleeper and tunnel work
  • Recognise early signs of silicosis and the case for health surveillance
  • Make a sound judgement in a realistic rail worksite scenario
