Dust & Fumes Advanced: Offshore Oil & Gas

Tier 2

Operational Overview

You already know dust and fumes are dangerous. This course goes further. It looks at how exposure actually happens on the welding, fabrication and surface preparation tasks common on an offshore facility, and what genuinely stops it.

You will work through exposure limits, the full hierarchy of controls, and how to choose and fit RPE properly in an environment where space, weather and evacuation routes all shape what's practical. You will also look at where your legal duties sit, and where your employer's duties begin.

This is not a repeat of your induction. Treat it as the next step in becoming the person on the platform who understands the risk properly, not just the rule.

Instructional Objectives

  • Recognise the hazard. Identify how welding fume, abrasive blasting dust and respirable crystalline silica are generated on common offshore tasks.
  • Apply the hierarchy. Choose elimination, substitution and engineering controls before relying on RPE.
  • Select and fit RPE correctly. Match protection factor to the task, accounting for offshore-specific constraints.
  • Understand the limits. Interpret exposure limits and monitoring obligations relevant to offshore work.
  • Know your duties. Identify employer and worker obligations under the regulatory framework governing this region.
