Operational Overview
Noise is one of the most persistent physical hazards on a nuclear site, present in turbine halls, pump rooms, ventilation plant, and decommissioning work, often for an entire shift. Hearing loss caused by this exposure is permanent and irreversible, but it is also entirely preventable.
This course builds on general noise awareness to address the specific challenges of a nuclear operating environment: combining hearing protection with respiratory and radiological PPE, working in areas where dosimetry for two different hazards runs simultaneously, and applying the correct regulatory framework depending on whether a facility is licensed by the NRC or owned and operated by the DOE.

Instructional Objectives
- Explain the physiological mechanism of noise-induced hearing loss.
- Identify the applicable exposure limits and the jurisdictional split between OSHA and 10 CFR Part 851 depending on facility ownership.
- Recognise nuclear-specific noise sources and their typical exposure levels.
- Calculate and interpret time-weighted average noise exposure using both OSHA and NIOSH exchange rates.
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to noise hazards in a nuclear operating environment.
- Select and fit hearing protection devices compatible with radiological PPE.
- Describe the required elements of a Hearing Conservation Program.
- Manage the combined demands of noise control and radiological protection in a Radiologically Controlled Area.
