Silica Dust Advanced: Nuclear
Operational Overview
This course assumes you have already completed Silica Dust Advanced: Exposure Management and Compliance. That course covered the assessment methodology, the control hierarchy and health surveillance design. This one does not repeat any of it.
Here, you apply that framework primarily to operational and decommissioning nuclear sites, with one critical addition: dust generated during decommissioning may not just be silica dust. It may also be radiologically active. This course covers both hazards side by side, and how to tell which one, or both, you are actually managing.

Instructional Objectives
- Apply the RCS assessment methodology to concrete and masonry cutting, breaking and grinding tasks during nuclear decommissioning.
- Correctly determine whether dust generated in a controlled area should be treated as potentially radiologically active, and apply the right dual framework when it is.
- Reconcile water suppression and extraction controls with Radiation Work Permit constraints.
- Maintain both the COSHH health surveillance programme and the separate IRR17 classified worker medical surveillance trigger, without conflating the two.
- Apply real-time dust monitoring within controlled-area access and contamination control rules, and understand the environmental discharge duty if dust escapes a controlled area.
