Operational Overview
Nuclear facilities are not mines, but silica dust still shows up. Concrete cutting during maintenance, structural work during outages, and certain insulation and refractory materials can all generate fine crystalline silica dust if the task is not properly controlled.
This course builds on the foundation silica dust knowledge you already hold and applies it directly to nuclear facility work. You will look at the specific tasks that drive exposure, the federal legal framework that applies because of how nuclear work is regulated in Canada, and the practical controls that protect a whole career of breathing, not just one shift.

Instructional Objectives
- Explain how respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis and related lung disease.
- Identify the tasks and materials in a nuclear facility environment that can generate silica dust exposure.
- Apply the Canada Labour Code, Part II and COHSR to their own duties, including how the federal silica exposure limit is set by reference to the ACGIH TLV.
- Interpret that exposure limit and understand why it can change without COHSR itself being amended.
- Select and justify controls using the hierarchy of control for nuclear facility silica sources.
- Understand health surveillance obligations and the early signs of silica-related lung disease.
