Silica Dust Advanced: Mining (AU)

Tier 2

Operational Overview

Drilling, blasting, crushing, loading. Every stage of getting rock out of the ground and moving it can put fine crystalline silica dust into the air, and once it is airborne it does not stay out of your lungs unless you actually control it.

This course builds on the foundation silica dust knowledge you already hold and applies it directly to mining work. You will look at the specific tasks and processes that drive exposure underground and in open-cut operations, the legal duties that sit with your role, and the practical controls that protect a whole career of breathing, not just one shift.

Instructional Objectives

  • Explain how respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis and related lung disease.
  • Identify the mining tasks and processes that generate the highest silica dust exposure.
  • Apply the Model WHS Act and state-enacted mining provisions to their own duties.
  • Interpret the binding workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica.
  • Select and justify controls using the hierarchy of control for mining-specific dust sources.
  • Understand health surveillance obligations and the early signs of silica-related lung disease.
