Leadership Is About People, Not Just Tasks

The Same Structured Attention, Applied Differently

You already bring structure and attention to managing a task on site. This course asks you to bring that same structured attention to your team's wellbeing, not as an extra burden, but as a genuinely practical leadership skill.

This covers recognising when someone genuinely isn't themselves, running a wellbeing toolbox talk that actually lands, holding a supportive conversation using a structure that works, balancing that with the real demands of running a site, and knowing when something needs to go beyond your own role.

A team that trusts their supervisor to notice and respond well raises problems early, while they're still manageable. That benefits everyone, including you.

None of this requires you to become a counsellor. It requires the same practical structure you already apply everywhere else.

Instructional Objectives

  • Recognise Genuine Strain. Notice real behavioural change in your team, not just assume everything is fine.
  • Run a Real Toolbox Talk. Deliver a wellbeing toolbox talk that actually engages your team.
  • Hold a Supportive Conversation. Use a structure that genuinely works, without needing to be a counsellor.
  • Know Your Limits. Recognise when something needs to be escalated beyond your own role.

The Critical Logic of Safety

A Site Without a Structure for Checking In

A supervisor, well liked by his team, had never run a formal wellbeing toolbox talk or held a structured check-in conversation, relying instead on an open-door approach and hoping people would come to him if something was wrong.

One team member's stress built for months before it became serious enough to affect their performance and wellbeing significantly. A subsequent review found the supervisor had genuinely cared, but the lack of any structured process meant early signs were missed entirely.
