Silica Dust Advanced: Exposure Management and Compliance

Tier 2

Operational Overview

Respirable crystalline silica has moved from a background construction hazard to one of HSE's most active enforcement priorities. Over 1,000 inspections are underway across Great Britain, targeting engineered stone processing specifically, and prohibition notices are already being issued where controls fall short.

This course moves you from recognising silica dust as a hazard to actually managing it: correctly applying the assessment duty, running the right control hierarchy, and running a surveillance programme that would hold up if an HSE inspector walked in tomorrow.

By the end, you should be able to defend your approach to an inspector, not just describe the hazard to a colleague.

Instructional Objectives

  • Explain how RCS causes silicosis, COPD and lung cancer, and why engineered stone processing has driven a rise in accelerated silicosis among younger workers.
  • Apply the COSHH 2002 assessment duty to tasks generating RCS, referencing the 0.1 mg/m3 WEL correctly.
  • Apply the water suppression, extraction and RPE control hierarchy set out in current HSE guidance, including the practical end of dry cutting engineered stone.
  • Design a defensible health surveillance programme referencing HSE's updated RCS surveillance guidance.
  • Recognise the limitations of real-time dust monitoring as a supplement to, not a replacement for, formal assessment.
  • Maintain audit-ready records capable of withstanding the current HSE inspection campaign.
