Silica Dust Advanced: Federal Annex

Tier 2

Operational Overview

If you've worked through the Abu Dhabi annex, you've already met the 0.025 mg/m3 figure, ACGIH's threshold limit value for respirable crystalline silica. Federally regulated Canadian workplaces use the exact same number, but the legal mechanism getting them there is genuinely different, and binding in a way Abu Dhabi's isn't.

COHSR Part X doesn't write a silica figure directly into the regulation. It points to ACGIH's own published Threshold Limit Values, as amended, and makes that the binding limit. When ACGIH updates its TLV booklet, the federal limit updates with it, without Canada ever needing to amend the regulation itself.

This annex sits on top of your Silica Dust Advanced foundation course. It teaches you how a living reference actually works in practice, and why that has real consequences for how current your own knowledge and materials need to stay.

Instructional Objectives

  • A Binding, Borrowed Number. Know COHSR Part X incorporates ACGIH's TLV by reference as a genuinely binding limit.
  • The Living Reference. Understand why the binding figure can change without COHSR itself being amended.
  • The Substantive Duties. Apply sections 10.3-10.26, hazard investigation, control, training and warning signs.
  • Stay Current. Know why a training document from a few years ago could already be citing a stale figure.
