HAVS Advanced: Vibration Risk Management and Compliance (Australia)

Tier 2

Operational Overview

This course builds on the awareness you already hold. It moves from recognising hand-arm vibration risk to actually managing it: assessing exposure properly, applying the right controls, and running a health surveillance program that catches problems before they become permanent.

Australia has no single binding exposure figure written into WHS law, but that does not mean there is nothing to work to. Safe Work Australia's own guidance sets out clear benchmark values, and a PCBU's duty to manage this risk so far as is reasonably practicable is real and enforceable. By the end of this course, you should be able to defend your approach to a WHS regulator, not just describe the hazard to a colleague.

Instructional Objectives

  • Calculate and interpret daily vibration exposure against Safe Work Australia's recommended Exposure Action Value and Exposure Limit Value benchmarks.
  • Apply the hierarchy of control to a real tool and task.
  • Design a defensible tiered health surveillance approach and know when to escalate.
  • Recognise the limitations of wearable exposure monitoring as a supplement to, not a replacement for, formal risk assessment.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate the PCBU's duty to manage the risk so far as is reasonably practicable.
