Cyber Security for Nuclear
Operational Overview
A nuclear facility runs on two kinds of systems. Business IT keeps the organisation running: email, scheduling, records. Operational technology keeps the physical plant running: control systems, monitoring, safety-related equipment. Both matter, and they carry genuinely different risks.
For years, the assumption was that operational technology sitting on its own isolated network, with no direct internet connection, was effectively out of reach. The most significant real-world cyber incident in nuclear history proved that assumption wrong, and it did so without ever needing an internet connection to the target at all.
This course covers the genuine difference between IT and OT risk, why isolation alone is not protection, and what UK nuclear security law actually requires of the people and organisations responsible for getting this right.

Instructional Objectives
- Know the difference. Understand why IT and IT risk are not the same as OT and OT risk.
- Question the air gap. Recognise that an isolated system is not automatically an unreachable one.
- Know the law. Understand what NISR 2003 and ONR's Security Assessment Principles actually require.
- Apply good practice. Build the habits that control devices and removable media around OT.
