Project Management Applications: Megaprojects
Operational Overview
Megaprojects, infrastructure and capital programmes running into billions of pounds and many years, follow a pattern so consistent that researchers have documented it across decades and countries. Costs rise. Schedules slip. Scope gets cut. The pattern repeats.
This course looks at why that pattern is so persistent, and what genuinely changes it: planning against optimism bias rather than embodying it, and building governance suited to a project's real scale and duration.
You will work through a realistic scenario and finish with a short assessment to confirm you are ready.

Instructional Objectives
- Know the pattern. Explain why megaprojects fail in consistent, well-documented ways.
- Plan against optimism bias. Recognise it in estimates and business cases, and counter it deliberately.
- Govern at scale. Apply decision-making practices suited to megaproject scale and duration.
- Hold the line under pressure. Respond appropriately when a business case comes under pressure to be optimistic rather than accurate.
