Industrial Mastery Pathway
AI in Maritime
Operational Overview
Artificial intelligence has moved from the design office to the bridge. Collision-avoidance and situational-awareness platforms now sit alongside radar and ECDIS on modern vessels, voyage-planning software recommends routes based on weather and traffic patterns, and predictive maintenance tools flag engine issues before they become failures.
This course looks at where AI genuinely helps at sea today, and where it can quietly lead a confident officer astray. The two are closely linked. An AI tool's confidence in its own output has nothing to do with whether that output is actually correct, and the gap between the two is sharpest where the underlying data itself cannot be trusted.
You will finish this course able to spot where that gap opens up, and with a simple set of habits for closing it before it costs you.

Instructional Objectives
- Where AI already works. Identify the AI tools already in routine use across bridge, engine room and shore-side operations.
- Confident but wrong. Explain why an AI system's confidence is not evidence of accuracy, especially when its inputs have been corrupted.
- Good judgement. Apply simple cross-checking habits before acting on any AI-generated output.
- The rules that apply. Recognise the current UK position on automated decision-making and the standards that govern AI use at work.
